Themes
The Father’s love for the Son • Jesus’ baptism • The Son shared with us • Eternal satisfaction
For eternity, the Father has never tired of Him, so how could we? We can’t possibly get to the end of thinking, knowing, enjoying, and sharing with others all there is to think, know, enjoy, and share about Him. He has satisfied the Father’s heart and mind; surely, he can ours.
Scripture reading
Matthew 3:16–17
This call to worship1 is from a disciple of Jesus named Matthew. When he was describing Jesus’ baptism, he wrote the following:
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Prayer
Father in heaven, thank you for showing us your eternal Son. It seems you love your Son, and always have and always will, with a unique and dazzling intensity. And It’s never been any other way. Our purest and our best imaginations, Father, can’t get close to understanding just how much you do love him and how much delight he brings you. Father, you do everything… for him. He’s the beginning. He’s the end. And everything that’s been has been for Him. We exist… because of Him. We continue to breathe because of Him. We all know each other because of Him. And Father, we’re here now, in this place, in this moment, here in Beverdam, because of Him. He is your all. Father, enable us to look away from ourselves, this morning, and see Him. Help us, Father, to set ourselves aside, just for this brief moment, and look at Him… because He is the one that delights you. He’s The. Beloved. Son. There is nothing more precious to you. There is no blessing higher than Him. There is nothing better than Him. He is your treasure. And you have shared Him with us. For eternity you’ve never tired of Him, so how could we? We can’t possibly get to the end of thinking and knowing and enjoying and sharing with others all there is to think and know and enjoy and share about him. He has satisfied your heart and mind, surely he can ours. Father, take away our blind boredom this morning. If you can be infinitely and eternally satisfied in Him, then surely he is overwhelmingly all sufficient and satisfying for us… in every situation, in every conversation, in every circumstance, in every assignment we’re given, in every errand we run, in every predicament we find ourselves in, in every context, in every state we’re in. in every position we occupy, in every development, in every crisis, in every entanglement, in every outcome, in every place — including this place. Right here. Right now. In Beverdam, gathered with your people. In the name of your pleasing, delightful, and beloved Son, Amen
