God’s Word is not more information in a world clearly drowning in noise. It is Himself, giving His very self to us in Christ. All other information will blow by us like annoying sounds. Only the Living Word, Jesus, can transform us and renew us.
Unlike any time before this, we are living with unprecedented information overload. It is almost impossible to turn off. Everywhere: data, opinions, noise bombard us. At such a time as this, God’s Word ought to leap out at us in stark contrast.
God’s Word is not another piece of information vying for attention. It is Himself giving Himself to us in Christ. It is God Himself in action, a dynamic and living presence, not a static group of words and sentences and statements and doctrines that we can examine. His Word examines us.
In Jesus Christ, the Word became flesh and blood, cells and neurons, muscle and organs. God didn’t merely inform us about Himself; He gave Himself to us.
And when encountered, His self-giving is transformational. It transforms us at the deepest parts of who we are and at the core of our fundamental brokenness.
When we anchor into the Living Word, we find renewal—renewal from all the beating, bending, and bruising we take from the ocean of noise that drowns us. He alone breaks through the cacophony of this time with a clear and kind sound—a voice—inviting us into relationship with the Triune God Himself.
What would have to be true for us, amidst all the noise, to turn our ears and hearts to the Living Word, who alone can speak life and truth into our very being?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. — John 1:1, 14
This spiritual antipasto has an accompanying call to worship:
The uncontainable God of exuberance.
God’s words are not words and sentences about Himself; His Word is Himself. His Word brings Himself to us — not information to us. In Jesus, who is His Word, He delights to meet with us and to be with us.
